Chaos At Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion Church........

When one sits back and analyzes the conditions at Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion church, 65 Lake Street, White Plains, NY, you are forced to wonder about the state of mind of its members. Are they so beaten down and in a state of denial or are they simply not able to think rationally any longer. I believe that there is a condition that the members suffer from that is akin to being a slave for so long that you become an emotional slave; you can't think independently any longer and you actually sympathize with the slave master. There actually is a feeling that the slavemaster is a good person and is only looking out for the slaves' best interest. The truth of the matter is the slavemaster is only looking out for his own best interests. I believe that the Mt. Hope members; to a large extent feel pity for the pastor (Rev. Dr. Odinga Lawrence Maddox) because he is a truly pathetic individual. Any minister that can drive a more-than-self-sufficient community pillar of a church, which Mt. Hope was when he arrived in August of 1992, into the ground and make it a house of shame as oppossed to a house of worship is a sorry human being. Mt. Hope Church had approximately 425 members when Rev. Maddox arrived and each year the membership has declined to the point where there are approximately 75 - 90 semi-active members currently. Instead of sitting back and analyzing what he is doing wrong, he has consistently taken the view that it's the members fault why there are not more members there. His only solution is to make heavy-handed appeals to the few members to dig deeper in their pockets and make pledges & etc to try and make up for the financial shortfalls that everyday dogs the church. Officers of the church who don't pledge hefty sums of money in addition to their tithes & offerings are removed from the particular boards, such as the Trustee Board. Basic things like retail space property taxes remain unpaid, utility bills go unpaid and there is a monthly struggle to pay the mortgage. Meanwhile a portion (very vocal) of the members still support this destructive situation and the pastor. Sometimes I think it goes back to the old times when people were not very educated and they automatically thought that the pastor was always right about everything. They don't realize that Mt. Hope A.M.E. Zion Church is dying a slow and extremely painful death; everything is over except the funeral!

On last evening (Tuesday June 12, 2007) there was a church meeting held to evaluate a major project that is being proposed. I was in attendance and listened to the presentation by the applicable parties. After the presentation, the presenters opened up the meeting for questions and several members asked their questions. After they were finished, I raised my hand and was recognized to put forth my question. At that point Pastor Maddox interrupted and said I was not eligible to ask questions, that I had been silenced and that I wasn't a member "in good standing". I said I didn't understand that because I had met the conditions of any other member of the church; I have paid all of my General Claims & District Quarterly assessments, which according to the A.M.E. Zion Discipline gives me the right to have a voice in churh matters. In addition, I have paid all Women's Day, Men's Day & Church Anniversary assessments plus other organization dues and made some offerings. How would I not be a member with rights to speak? Well it all comes down to a personal matter: I wrote a letter to the Presiding Elder - Cynthia Willis-Stewart in June of 2004 when the evidence of Mt. Hope Church's failure was there for all to see. I asked the Presiding Elder to reccomend to the Bishop that Pastor Maddox not be returned to Mt. Hope Church during the Annual Conference that was being held during the following week. I gave her information regarding wrong-doing and just basic incompetence on the part of the Pastor. I told her that if Pastor Maddox was returned that Mt. Hope would surely end up a failed church. Given the current situation, I rest my case. Well Pastor Maddox suspended me from The Trustee Board of the church and has remained punitive, vindictive and vicious in his behavior ever since. I stand by what I said and did because everything was true and most of the members knew that to be the case, except that they were afraid to stand up and say so. I neglected to mention that Pastor Maddox also demanded that I leave the meeting, I stated emphatically that I would not and he tried to demand that members of the Trustee Board escort me out of the church. Luckily, the trustees present had better sense than the "tyrant" (Pastor Maddox) and refused to move. There was an outcry also from most of the members for the Pastor to leave the situation alone and go on with the meeting.

So this is the expalnation for him trying to silence me, while acting in a very un-religious manner at most times. I wonder if this is what our Lord & Savior would want from "a man of the cloth". Everything that I know says otherwise and he will surely be made to pay for such hypocritical behaviour. No wonder most of the members have left the church and such a heavy financial burden has been placed on the few that remain. If you believe that i'm not being truthful, simply come and visit our "big empty church" on any Sunday at 10:15 a.m. and see for yourself. It might be more powerful if you were to attend any first Sunday.

This is as much as I have to say at this time; stay tuned for other updates as they occur.

It seems as though you are very sad and lonesome individual my sugestion to you is to pick up your BIBLE and got psalms 30: which is the Prayer for thanks because when you take on one of gods chosen you are taking on GOD.
Davis you need some spritual as well as professional HELP!

Mr.Davis my comment to you is you are angry because of being let go from your trustee board but you should do what ever it takes to right whatever wrong you did to be let go.But if i was that pastor you would never ever hold another office in that church thats what the member need to make sure of. Start Praying!!!

Oh Good Ole "Anonymous Said"....

Thank you for your comments and surely you are a professional to make such judgements. I would guess that you were in attendance at the meeting last night. You clearly don't have the ability of reason since you deny facts and come up with your hypothesis instead of addressing factual situations. You are truly a detriment to the welfare of Mt. Hope Church.

Also, I just love your comment about taking on a man of GOD because it is a certainty that everyone who says he/she is a minister was indeed called by GOD!
However, it couldn't be the GOD that I know and have served for all of my life. And I "should do whatever it takes to right whatever wrong you did to be let go"; when did telling the truth about GOD's church become wrong? Perhaps you being such a great christian, you can enlighten me about that. Additionally, you don't have to worry about me wanting to hold office under this pastor; I would prefer to eat nails for lunch.

I have never ceased praying so there is nothing to start. Thank you so much.

By the way, you can call me Glover instead of Davis or Mr. Davis because you obviously know me personally - you are part of Mt. Hope Church. You obviously couldn't wait to post your comment since you knew from last night that I would be posting something today (be careful since it is not hard to figure out who you are).

Why would a response to this "blog" warrant the statement "be careful." Now that sounds like the threat of a "slave master." Quite honestly I think it's time to get to the base... what exactly is it you, Mr. Davis, are searching for? You have attacked the membership, board members, Pastor, Presiding Elder and Bishop. What/whom is left? With this much resentment, starting your own church seems the only answer to give you the peace you seemingly urgently need. Longetivity at a church (or any institution nowadays) does not entitle one to ownership. Mt. Hope is GOD's Church. May His will be done!

Your evaluation of the situation is almost comical; do you get out of my correspondence that I have any desire to own the church? If so, you know me much better than I know myself(how scary is that)!

Incidently the "be careful" is meant to say that even though you are using "anonymous said" to voice your opinions, which you have a perfect right to, I am able to determine who you are. I may never reveal to you that I know but every time I see or speak with you it will be in my mind and you will probably be able to recognize that I know it was you.

What a joke to try and divert the topic of discussion! When you respond the next time, how about addressing one of the many factual problems that I have written about.
Let's see if you can do that and make some sense with those comments.

My only desire is to see Mt. Hope Church get back on the road to recovery and the ONLY WAY FOR THAT TO HAPPEN IS TO REMOVE THE CAUSE OF ITS PRESENT PROBLEM (THE PASTOR IN CHARGE). Is this not perfectly clear to you and others like you. You are the worst kind of leader; one that uses avoidance or unwarranted attacked against those who really, really care! Stop trying to treat the symthoms and deal with the cause once and for all. Not only will GOD be pleased, but so will a great many others!

(again I challenge you to say that what I have identified is all a lie. I know you can't do that, so hopefully you can address a few of the issues for a change - that would be worth so much!!!!!)

Incidently, during all my years of service to MT. Hope Church; not one member could ever accuse me of trying to own the church. I'm a righteous and fair person and only want the same from any leader that is sent to our church or those that have the supervisory authority over them. If everyone carried out their responsibility, we would not have our current problem.

For the love of God, "Anonymous said", give me a break!!! Nothing you said addresses the problems/issues!!! Unless "Davis" is who you fault for the demise of YOUR church, get a grip and address the issues; stop wasting time...

Miss D said...

Oh and uh, "A Christian said", the same goes for you since you think the base of the problem is what Mr. Davis wants...its obvious the 2 of you dont have a clue...what a joke. If you think the state of your church is in the Will of God, your church's current demise is only the beginning. The bottom line is NOBODY has yet addressed the issues he has raised or challenged the validity of it! All your doing is attacking him!!! "sad, lonesome, angry" You are reverting to some very obivous and common diversion techniques to take the emphasis off of the problems by highlighting what YOU feel is Mr. Davis' problems! You cant deny the truth...and that, since you cant prove otherwise, is what Mr. Davis has presented so...Now what?

By the way "a christian said", the situation at Mt. Hope Church is surely not the will of GOD (touche' to "miss d" for responding to that statement),if it were his will our church would be in a hopeless situation. GOD would never want what we have at Mt. Hope Church to prevail under any circumstances - of that I am 100% certain. If you don't believe that then you most certainly are not a religious person and you don't serve the same GOD that I do.

Incidently, I also know who you are. And all I can say is that you will have a lot to answer for (being in the position of power that you are in). The clues are all over your writings -how about that!

For the other two "anonymous" I misstated something before - at least one of you were not at the meeting on Tuesday night. But you sure got a lot of the details quickly. Hiding behind anonymous is not going to help you at this point in time; perhaps later on when more people are aware of and commenting on the site it might be a little more difficult!

Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through christ which strenghtens me.
The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith, a driver called jesus, you will make it to a place called success. And this is the word of a christian

"anonymous said"..........

You know you truly are clueless! Take your blinders off and realize that Jesus Christ does not want his saints to be so unaware and passive; that would not serve him well. He gave us the intelligence that we all supposedly have, how about using that intelligence when you see things that are wrong and that hurt his churches. Get in the real world; please!!!!!

I think that you will find the Lord's action manifesting itself very soon and I hope you don't end up looking like a fool. God will not let this continue for much longer; I truly belive that!
